A GRAVEYARD TO LET. (1949). Carter Dickson. ***.This is another Sir Henry Merrivale adventure, this time in America at the house of his friend, Frederick Manning. Merrivale had come to America from England for a visit, it turned out, to the White House, but was intercepted by Manning’s friend at the docks and urged to come to the Upstate New York manor.

Manning was a wealthy man, and the president of the Manning Trust, a non-profit that sought to support the arts. As we go along, we learn that Manning’s company is rumored to be on the skids financially, though this might or might not be the case.

We further learn that Manning is suspected of embezzeling a large amount of money from the Foundation. Merrivale, as we know from previous novels, is an expert in locked-room mysteries, and we are waiting to see what happens next. But, to our surprise, there isn’t a locked room. There is, however, a swimming pool outside the manor where Manning manages to disappear from.

How he does it and his subsequent moves drives the story forward. Fear not, Merrivale manages to solve all the mysteries in time to catch his plane to Washington.
